I have recently been working on some new music which is quiet and reflective. It has been some time since I’ve done anything much musically and in this lockdown year of 2020 it is important to have some form of creative outlet, this is mine. I enjoy repetition and this is the keystone of what I am trying to create, simple, repeating patterns that don’t insist on the listeners attention.

The first track is pretty much complete and it is down below for anybody who would care to give it a listen. There will, eventually, be enough tracks for a full album and I will add them here as they are done, probably.

Manuel Göttsching ‎– Inventions For Electric Guitar

Shortly before Lockdown I saw a copy of ‘Inventions For Electric Guitar’ in my local record store and completely ignored it as, based on the cover, it was probabaly not my thing at all, soI flicked past it and pretty much forgot about it. Then, about a month ago I was reading an article on Krautrock and I realised that he was from Ash Ra Temple, which made me listen to them and then try and find this album on spotify and, to my suprise, it wasn’t there. I did find it on youtube and have put it down below if you would like a listen.

Although it is a solo album and all the instruments (Guitar) are played by Göttsching it was originally subtittled Ash Ra Tempel VI, technically making it the sixth and final album under the Ash Ra Tempel name.

Göttsching started his career in music at a young age, with various Berlin pop and blues bands in the late-1960’s, including the Steeple Chase Bluesband. He was the mainstay of Ash Ra Tempel and Ashra, and also worked with The Cosmic Jokers, and other Kosmische Kuriere projects. Later he established a project together with Michael Hoenig, and on numerous occasions he also played as a guest/collaborator along with Klaus Schulze.

I like repetitive music that I can get lost in, I also like complex music, this album is both, and at times it can get pretty heavy. I can identify with it too as I released a couple of albums of my own that utilised only one guitar and it is difficult to differentiate the tones and sounds when you have only a single instrument. While Manuel was decades before me and is much better at it than I could ever be, I’m going to put a track called ‘Firefly Dance’ from the album ‘Massive’ that was recorded using only one guitar and nothing else.

I get a lot of inspiration from artists like Göttsching and whenever I listen back to tracks I’ve done in the past I get the urge to set all the gear up again and have another go, then something mundane happens, like needing to take the recycling out, and that urge fades as quickly as it arrived, but maybe, one of these days, I will inflict further noise pollution on a world that really already has enough, the only thing I really need, is time.

Dead Girl

I was tootling around on the internet and found a song I recorded years ago on a site I’d forgotten about. I used to write and record a lot of music, enough that I was approaching almost competent at times, though not that often. I actually sing on this one, although one’s definition of singing may be stretched to the limit here. Checking the metadata on the file it tells me I recorded in 2005, which sounds about right. That picture over there is me around then. Anyway, I thought I’d share it:

There’s a lot going on in it, much of which is very low in the mix, like me going absolutely mental on guitar on occasions. For anybody who wants to know about the recording it would all have been done on Cubase, the drums would be a programme called BFD. All instruments played by me. The guitar is probably a US Stratocaster (in Sunburst in case you wondered) with bass being an Ibanez Fretless (I still have both of these guitars). For anybody who doesn’t want to know, sorry you had to read that.

I may post some more of this stuff as I find it, but not too much, I know there’s a linit to what people can take!

All the way back in 2006

I was just looking at an album on Bandcamp and remembered I had a login for the site, so I did just that and up popped an album I put there in 2006, I’d completely forgotten it was on there. The album was recorded with a single Fender Telecaster and consists of very short instrumental pieces, which is why it’s called ‘Miniatures’. It was quite well received at the time by the few who listened to it.

Here are the release notes written by Robert Nunnally:

“Miniatures is both a concept and a recording format for this album. The album is the attempt to capture those moments of childhood existing o300x300nly in memory which, when recalled, cause a slight tightening of the chest at the realisation of things lost, and to capture the beauty of those moments in sound. These small moments, pristine in their imperfection, give rise to a reverie this album seeks, in a small way, to capture.

These tracks were recorded very quickly, with dead notes and interference left in for the most part. Each piece is by design a miniature in the way of childhood–with the good and the imperfect all part of the memory.

Each first successful take was kept and used, regardless of whether the central heating boiler or the washing machine decided to take the exact wrong moment to start up and cause clicks to the audio recording. This working process involved the use of only one instrument, in this case an old Fender Telecaster that has been damaged over the years. Some parts have been replaced, others repaired so that the way it plays appeals. The joy of creation lies in part, in the idea of the restriction. No other instrument was used.

Miniatures seeks to open again the doorway into the pristine imperfection of childish things. We hope you enjoy this reverie”.

I also have an album called ‘Massive’ somewhere, I’ll have to dig it out.

I’ve been thinking recently about doing some more recording, just for my own enjoyment, but taking into account the many different musical influences that I’ve absorbed in the last 10 years, less guitar, more keyboard, in the Electronic/Ambient field I suppose. If I get around to it I’ll put it up here for free listening, probably.
